Let’s go to the fair! We love fairs. State fairs, county fairs, street fests – whatever! Not terribly long ago, we headed up to Wisconsin with our brother-in-law, Ben, and niece, Grace, to explore some gluttony and see what the Wisconsin State Fair had to offer. Yippee!
Enjoy some pictures of us making fools of ourselves, enjoying music, eating all kinds of crazy things, and imbibing in some local craft.
Let’s start with some alligator bites!
Ben got a real kick out of us forcing Grace to try them. They’re good, actually. And yes, they do taste like chicken!
It was definitely crowdy on this very hot summer day. I’m suuuuuper glad I forgot my sunglasses.
We stopped by the Budweiser pavilion to catch some live bands. It’s always a treat to see some rockin’ music. When the bands are good, anyway. And these bands? Well yeah, they were good. Phew.
Have you ever had deep-fried bacon? That’s a thing. It’s not a thing for us, though, as the deep frying totally takes away from the bacon. And ye shall never take away the bacon flavor, say we.
We also headed over to the Wisconsin food pavilion to try some home-state goodness, of which there was an endless supply. I liked watching all these folks make a gazillion grilled cheeses.
Grace found pretzels bigger than our heads. I wish you could actually tell how massive these things were. They were so huge!
We opted for the pretzel balls with cheese sauce instead.
After engorging ourselves more than a little bit, we headed over to check out the livestock and watch a bit of judging. We always love seeing the animals and how proud the kids are of the ones they’ve raised. Bravo!
What’s up, goat? We love the goats haha.
After cooling off inside for a bit, we decided to watch some hog racing. Because, what fair is complete without it?!
We figured some small little piggies were going to run out of the gate. Nope! Some big, fat guys just trotted along, looking for food, going to the bathroom, and wandering aimlessly. It was hilarious. Fortunately, one of them eventually made it all the way around to take the victory.
We then thought we’d check out the gondola ride, or ski lift, or whatever you call it. This gave us a chance to see how big the fairground was, and of course, to harass people on the ground. I mean, to say ‘hi’ to all of them. ;)
There was also an arts and crafts contest we had to check out. They also had judging for rebuilding tractors, which was cool to see. Some things were very impressive. Others, just maybe…good try, y’all!
And these princesses.
These carriage displays and contests reminded us of the ones back in Seville.
Back to food! More food, obviously.
Deep-fried, bacon-wrapped tater tots! Not as impressive as they sound, unfortunately. Sad face.
These massive cheese curds, on the other hand, were definitely a Grade A highlight of the food here. Goodness gracious.
The adults had to stop at The Micro, naturally. This is the Wisconsin craft beer tent at the fair, and it has oodles of great things to try. Prost!
I won’t show you much more food, because it’s rather disgusting of us at this point. But, have you ever heard of the Original Cream Puff? It’s a big deal up here, and we’ve been told they only offer them once a year.
So, we stood in line to get ours and see what all the fuss is about!
Many, many cream puffs are sold here every year. I can’t even imagine the volume.
Et voilà.
And I gotta be honest…
…we’re just not sure what all the fuss is about! They’re decent, but they’re not mind-blowing or anything. Maybe we just didn’t get it. Hrm. In any case, they were great to try and we can respect the craft!
Lastly, a bit of a cool-down before heading out.
Well, we definitely had a blast at the Wisconsin State Fair! We highly recommend you head up there to check it out for at least a day, maybe even more. Good times were had by all! If you can’t hit this fair, be sure to check out your local one. They’re always a good time.
A very special and very big thanks to all the fine folks at the Wisconsin State Fair, and all the good times!
