In case you don’t remember – or maybe you’re new here (Welcome!) – we lived in Guanajuato, Mexico, for a few months in 2014. That lovely city just happens to be the home base of our friend, lauded author, world traveler, and all-around great guy, Tim Leffel.
While we were in Guanajuato, Tim was working on a video series covering the cost of living in the area. He went around and interviewed some expats in their homes, discussing rent and daily costs, things of that nature.
We were two of the folks he interviewed during our time there, and the videos are now available to the public. If you want to see what home life is like for an expat in Guanajuato – great is what it is – and see some of us in our natural environment, have a look-see at Part 1 and Part 2 below. We’re featured in Part 2, but watch them both so you can get a glimpse into how it is in lovely GTO.

Thanks very much to Tim for asking us to be a part of this. We had an unforgettable experience in Guanajuato, and a great time hanging out with Tim and his family.
And, of course, be sure to check out Tim’s Cheapest Destinations website if you’re interested in living the life!

Have you ever been to Guanajuato? If so, what’d you think? If not, what say ye? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
Impeccable timing, guys! My husband and I (+ our two dogs) are going to be heading to Mexico in early 2015, with the plans of basing ourselves somewhere for 6 – 12 months. Guanajuato was on the list of places we were considering, but it’s been hard to find recent information about what we might expect to pay for lodging there. This was such a huge help and has made me feel more confident about our finances.
You may have mentioned this in one of your other posts on Guanajuato, but how did you wind up finding the place that you rented? I’ve heard that in Mexico it’s often best to just book short-term lodging and then wander about looking for “Se Renta” signs and the like…
Hey Steph! Did you guys decide on anything since you last posted?
A lot of people who do this prefer to land wherever first, and then find a place, exactly as you said. We’re not generally into that as we like to have something ready to go before we land. With a lot of research and perseverance, that gets easier with time. It’s really personal preference, though.
We found our place by doing a *lot* of googling. Eventually, I landed on the site of the owner, but he’s apparently always listed it on HomeAway and now lists on airbnb as well. You really just have to do a lot of research. I recommend checking out this post I wrote quite some time ago: https://www.jetsliketaxis.com/find-accommodation-in-advance/
Airbnb is always a decent place to start, and you can contact owners individually to ask them if they might be willing to give you a better deal if you’re staying for a month or longer. A lot of them don’t bother putting monthly prices in the system, and even more don’t think beyond that. As we always say: It never hurts to ask.
If you want any specific help with anything, feel free to send me an email. Otherwise, we’d love to hear how it goes and where you end up. ¡Buena suerte!
