We can’t write about every place we go. It’s impossible. Well, maybe not impossible, but quite a stretch. So, we now have our “In Pictures” series, which catalogs some of our memories from places we’ve been that we didn’t write the full-blown, insanely wordy posts that we’re known for.
During our trip to the Grand Canyon on our “Fabric of America” tour, we stayed in the city of Flagstaff, Arizona. And when one thinks of Arizona, it’s usually the desert. Lots and lots of desert. And heat.
Flagstaff is completely different.
Northern Arizona is its own bag of tricks; believe it or not, it was extremely cool when we were there. In August. I’m talking pants and jackets time. Part of that is due to the mountains, and part of that is due to its elevation of nearly 7,000 feet (2100m) above sea level.
Its biodiversity feels entirely separate from the the rest of the state, something that totally shocked us when we arrived.
Anyway, Flagstaff was our base in this part of the country, so here are some pictures of our experiences while there. These include a rainy visit to Walnut Canyon National Monument, just outside of town, which features yet another canyon and some very interesting cave dwellings from the Sinagua people.
If you want more, check out our “Fabric of America” series, as well as our posts about the Grand Canyon and the Little Colorado River Gorge, which are both in the area.

Have you ever been to Flagstaff, Arizona? If so, what’d you think? Let us know in the comments!
I wish we had some of that rainy weather now. It hasn’t rained in Flagstaff since mothers day. It is a great small town with lots to do in the surrounding areas. We live up in the pines at one of the mountains. Big change from downtown Chicago.
No rain would have been a treat when we were there haha. But yeah I suppose you need it given the possibility of wildfires and all. We’re very happy you two made it back there and hope you’re enjoying yourselves!
Those are some gorgeous scenic photos. Years ago, just me and my dog Smokey went to Arizona. We went through Tuscon, stayed in Sedona, then went through Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. We didn’t stay long in Flagstaff, now I wish we had.
Thanks, Dawn! I think Flagstaff is overlooked due to the Grand Canyon being the focus of everyone’s visit, but I suppose most people are on a tighter schedule than we were, just wandering around and whatnot. With zero screaming kids. Haha.
I loved our short visit to Flagstaff. Like you, I was surprised by the total change in climate. I remember most the smell of pine trees, reminding me of Spokane, WA.
Yeah it’s definitely a shock to the Arizona stereotype when you go up to that region. Thanks for stopping by!
