Hey there! During our fall stay in Freiburg, Germany, we headed out with Bev to the nearby village of Elzach to have a hang and meet up with our friend, David from Decker Bier, to visit the über-local brewery, Löwenbrauerei Elzach.

Before meeting up with David, we had plenty of time to enjoy the town and eat some tasty treats.

The below says, “One must attempt the impossible in order to achieve the possible.” Nice.

In the midst of our stroll, we hit up Gasthaus zur Krone for some traditional German eats.

There were also some prints by the artist/photographer, Sebastian Wehrle, in the restaurant, which is somewhat common around these parts. I love, love, love his work, so I had to ogle and share a couple of them with you.

After all that, it was time to head to the brewery to meet up with David and Johannes, the brewery’s owner.

This local brewery has been around and in Johannes’ family since 1856. That seems super-old by our American standards, but I guess it’s rather young for a German brewery.

Johannes and his clan brew up local beers with the best ingredients for citizens of the region, and back in the day, they used to do home delivery! Could you imagine your local brewery stopping by every few days with a fresh batch, just like a milkman? Crazy. And awesome.

These days, their beers are available in stores, but anyone can also stop by to pick up a case or three to go, which we saw several times while we were there.

We wanted to visit a very local German brewery on our trip, and David obliged as some of his company’s beers are brewed here by Johannes and his crew. So, we got to try Johannes’ traditional beers as well as a couple of David’s more modern takes on classic German styles. David was nice enough to translate for Bev and for a lot of what we didn’t understand as our German isn’t as good as it used to be.

At the end of our tour, we of course had to try some beers and get some of our own to go.

And, there you have it! A huge thanks to David for taking us here, and to Johannes for keeping the tradition of local, independent craft beer alive in this day and age.

If you’re visiting Germany, we highly recommend you try to visit a brewery like this, as literally hundreds – if not thousands – dot the towns and villages in every corner of this country. And if you’re in the Freiburg area, this is one to check out. Zum Wohl!
